In the small town of Harbor Springs, Michigan, two inseparable friends – Luke Bosker and Chase Fairbairn – have shared countless adventures and experiences since their early childhood.
Little did they know that their close bond would be tested in more ways than just on the water.
Luke and Chase were introduced into each other’s lives at a very young age. In Harbor Springs, most residents have gone to school together and remained close throughout the years. Their fathers, Troy Bosker and Paul Fairbairn, were marathon racers, and the boys spent their first years together in the pits at these races.
Over the years, their friendship only deepened. They faced the typical trials of youth with grace, knowing they could always count on each other. When one calls for the other, they always go. It is a rare friendship; they care about the other more than themselves.
The most challenging experience of their friendship would be the health issues that Chase began experiencing at the age of 11. Chase was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and had to have a pacemaker and defibrillator implanted and was put on a heart transplant list. In April of 2016, Chase received a heart transplant and began the long road to recovery.
Luke and Chase were at the end of their first year in high school at the time of the transplant. Because we live in a small town, the community and all of Chase’s friends rallied around him. In April of 2024, it will be eight years since he had his transplant. Chase has triumphed over this and continues to power through it because of his positive attitude. It is a miracle for him to be alive, let alone to be so active.
There is almost nothing that Luke and Chase don’t have in common. They have been riding snowmobiles and dirt bikes together since they were young, so it was only natural that they would eventually decide to test the waters of boat racing. As the years have passed, it has been so much fun to watch how much they have improved. There are countless people in the racing community whose support and guidance have contributed to their growth and success.
In the summer of 2022, they gained more experience in their racing careers at the Top ’O Michigan marathon
race in Indian River. Luke finished third overall in DSR, and Chase finished sixth in CSR. Little did they know the elusive win would be well worth the wait.
The summer of 2023 would prove to be one of the highlights of their friendship. After two grueling days of racing, both saw their hard work pay off. Luke and Chase triumphed and took first place overall in their respective classes. Together, they shared each other’s victory, one that would not have been as momentous without the other.
Top ’O Michigan is described as the world’s toughest outboard race. The riders are beaten up and sore for days afterward. It takes a lot of stamina and hard work to finish this race, let alone to win it. To see these boys win it together is a perfect description of their friendship. It has been one of the most challenging things they have been through together, only second to the miracle of Chase.
